Organising tournaments and sports leagues with Apoing

With Apoing you can run leagues and tournaments among the members of your community: Apoing handles sign-ups, builds the rounds or the bracket, notifies the players and keeps the standings from the results. Perfect for your residential padel league or the club's summer tournament.

Also in the app: on the Matches tab, tap the trophy icon to see your tournaments, create one, sign up, check your matches and the standings, and enter results. Tournament notifications open the tournament directly.

Available formats

Format How it works
League (round-robin) Every participant plays everyone else once, organised in rounds. With an odd number of entrants, one participant rests each round.
Single elimination Knockout bracket: winners advance to the next round until the final. If the number of entrants isn't 2, 4, 8, 16…, some go straight to round two (decided by the draw).

1. Create the tournament (organiser)

From the menu Count on me → Create tournament (under "Count on me → Tournaments" you'll find your communities' tournaments and your own). Community tournaments are created by the community's admins or members with the manage tournaments permission, because they use shared courts; a tournament without a community (among friends) can be created by anyone. Fill in:

  • Name and description shown to participants.
  • Community: if you link it to a community, only its members can sign up.
  • Sport and format (league or single elimination).
  • Maximum participants and players per team: 1 (singles) or 2 (pairs).
  • Dates for sign-up and start.
  • Options: let participants agree each match date and/or enter the results themselves (the opponent must confirm).

The tournament is created as a draft. Before opening registration, set the playing schedule (next step), then press "Open registration".

2. Playing schedule: when and where matches are played

This way players know which days the tournament is played before they sign up, and every match gets a day, time and court without anyone having to book.

  1. Block the tournament's court time in the community calendar: on the tournament page press "Block court time for the tournament" and mark the hours on the courts you want to use (for example, Saturdays 9:00–13:30). These are tournament bookings: they don't count towards anyone's booking limits and nobody else can book those hours.
  2. In the "Playing schedule" card on the tournament page, choose the courts, the date range and the match length (60, 90 or 120 minutes) and press "Save schedule". Apoing splits the blocked time into match slots and tells you how many there are.

Everyone on the tournament page (including people who haven't signed up yet) sees the summary, for example "Played on: Saturdays 9:00–13:30 · Court 1 · from 07/11 to 12/12 · 9 match slots".

The schedule is optional: without it, matches are generated with no date, and the organiser (or the players, if you enabled that option) sets it for each match.

3. Registration

While registration is open, players go to the tournament page and press "Join tournament". The organiser can also join and play. In pairs tournaments you enter your partner's email (they must be a member of the community and not already registered); if you don't have a partner yet, register alone and the organiser will assign one.

4. Generate the matches: draw and scheduling

When everyone is in, the organiser presses "Generate matches". Apoing holds a random draw (sign-up order gives no advantage) and creates the league rounds or the first round of the bracket. The tournament moves to "In progress" and every participant is notified. Matches can only be generated once.

If there's a playing schedule, each match is placed in a slot and its card shows the day, time and court:

  • League: one round per playing day, in order.
  • Knockout: the first round goes into the first slots; each following round, as soon as it's created, goes into the free slots after the previous one.

If not all matches fit, Apoing warns you: block more court time for the tournament and assign a slot from each match.

Moving a match to another slot: on the match card, pick another free slot under "Move to". The organiser can do it and, if you let participants agree match dates, so can the players in that match.

5. Results

  • Entered by the organiser: in the Matches tab, type the score (e.g. "6-3 6-4") and choose the winner.
  • Entered by participants (if you enabled that option): one player proposes it and the opponent is notified to confirm or dispute it. If disputed, the organiser decides.

In a knockout, as soon as a round finishes the next one is created automatically and the players who advance are notified. A result can't be changed once the next round has started.

6. Standings and the end

In a league, the table shows matches played (P), wins (W), draws (D), losses (L), games for and against and points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw). It's recalculated with every confirmed result. When the last match is played, the tournament moves to "Finished" and everyone is notified.

Frequently asked questions

Who can create a tournament?

Community tournaments: the community's admins or members with the manage tournaments permission (assigned in the community roles). A tournament without a community: any registered user. Only members can sign up to community tournaments.

Can I see when it's played before signing up?

Yes, if the organiser has set the playing schedule: the tournament page shows the days, times, courts and dates. If it hasn't been set yet, the page says so.

Do I need to book a court for my matches?

Not if the tournament has a playing schedule: the organiser has already blocked the court time and every match has its slot. Those bookings don't count towards your booking limits.

How is my opponent decided?

By a random draw when the matches are generated. In a league you play everyone; in a knockout the draw sets the bracket.

Do tournament matches count towards the ranking?

No: the tournament has its own standings. Community and circle rankings are based on the matches you create with "Join a match".

What if there's an odd number of us?

In a league, a different participant rests each round. In a knockout, some players go straight to round two, depending on the draw.

Can I correct a result?

The organiser can correct it and the standings are recalculated. In a knockout, only while the next round hasn't started.

Will I be notified about my matches?

Yes, with a notification on your phone (or browser): when matches are generated, when your match moves to another day or time, when your opponent proposes a result, when you advance and when the tournament ends.
