Match results and player rankings in Apoing

When you play a match in Apoing you can report the result, have it validated by every participant and appear in the ranking of your community and of your playing circle. Every confirmed result updates your points, your level and your ELO rating. Here is how it all works, step by step and in plain language.

Each community enables the ranking on its own. If your community hasn't enabled it, you won't see rankings; the admin can turn it on from Edit community → Enable ranking.

1. Reporting a match result

When the match is over, every participant gets a notification to close the result. Any of them can enter it, from the app (Match detail → Match result) or from the web. You just need to:

  • Assign the teams: say who played on Team A and who on Team B. This step matters: it's what lets us compute wins, losses and ELO.
  • Enter the score (for example "6-3 6-4" or "3-1").
  • Mark who won: Team A, Team B or a draw.

Once submitted, the result is proposed and the other players get a notification to validate it. External players (without an Apoing account) receive an email with a link to validate the result from the browser, with no need to sign up.

2. Validation between players

To keep results fair, the participants validate them. Each player can Confirm or Correct the proposed result:

  • If everyone agrees (unanimity), the result is closed and starts counting towards the ranking.
  • If 24 to 48 hours pass without unanimity, the result is settled by majority of those who voted.
  • If votes are tied or disputes prevail, the result stays disputed and scores no points until it's corrected and validated again.

If someone corrects the result, previous confirmations reset so everyone validates the new version.

3. How scoring works

Every confirmed match awards points for taking part and for the result:

Result Participation Result Total
✔ Win+2+5+7
= Draw+2+3+5
✖ Loss+2+0+2

⚡ Streak bonus: every 3 consecutive wins you get +2 extra points.

4. The ELO system, made simple

ELO is a rating that measures your real level by comparing you with your opponents. It's the same system used in chess and many sports. (It's not an acronym: it's named after Árpád Élő, the physicist who devised it.) It works like this:

  • Everyone starts at a reference ELO (1200).
  • When you win you go up; when you lose you go down.
  • What matters is who you play: beating an opponent with a higher ELO than yours raises you a lot; beating one with a lower ELO raises you a little. And the other way round for losses.
  • Each match changes your ELO by at most ±20 points. Between two players of the same level, the winner gains ≈+10 and the loser loses ≈-10 (a draw barely moves it).

So your ELO reflects your level fairly even if you play very different people. You don't have to calculate anything: Apoing does it automatically with every confirmed result. ELO has a floor, so no matter how many losses you string together it never goes negative.

5. Your player level

From your ELO, Apoing shows you a simple level from 1 to 7, so you can tell at a glance where you stand and look for balanced matches. The level rises and falls on its own as your ELO evolves.

This automatic level coexists with the "level" chosen when creating a match (to filter matches by difficulty): they are different things and don't interfere.

6. Two rankings: community and circle

There are two rankings, always separated by sport:

  • Community ranking: your position inside a specific club or community. Only that community's matches count. Any member can see it (even if they haven't played); your row is highlighted and the top three show a medal 🥇🥈🥉.
  • Your circle ranking: your position against the people you play with, in any community. It's personal: each player sees their own circle (the people they've played with), so your circle and someone else's aren't the same. Each person's rating is their overall level (their ELO across all their matches, in any community and open matches).

The same match counts both in its community ranking and in your overall circle level. There is no single worldwide ranking: the circle is yours, with your people.

7. Match MVP

When a result is closed, registered players can vote for the MVP (the best player of the match). The most voted one gets the recognition and adds an MVP to their profile. It's a way to reward good play beyond winning or losing.

8. Seasons

Rankings are organised by seasons, and it's the admin of each community who decides when a new one starts (from the Ranking screen itself, by typing the season name). When a new season starts, that community's points and ELO reset to zero; your match history is always kept. Until the admin starts a new one, the ranking keeps accumulating. You can browse past (archived) seasons from the season selector on the Ranking screen. If you score a match from a previous season, its points count in that season, not the current one.

9. Alerts and notifications

We notify you at every step —when a result is proposed, disputed, closed and when you're chosen MVP— both in your Apoing notifications list and with a push notification on your phone that takes you straight to the result screen.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have to assign teams when entering the result?

Because without knowing who was on each team we can't work out who won or update the ELO. If you don't assign teams, the result only counts as participation.

What happens if we don't agree on the result?

If there's no unanimity within 24-48 hours, it's settled by majority of those who voted. If votes are tied, it stays disputed and scores no points until someone corrects it and it's validated.

How does my ELO go up or down?

You go up when you win and down when you lose, but the amount depends on your opponents' ELO: beating someone better than you adds more; losing to someone worse subtracts more. You start at 1200.

Is there a worldwide ranking?

Not for now. There's your community ranking and your playing-circle ranking, separated by sport. We want you to compete with your people.

I can't see the ranking in my community, why?

The ranking is enabled per community. If it doesn't show up, the admin can enable it in Edit community → Enable ranking.

Who can vote for the MVP?

The registered players of the match, once the result is closed. Each player has one vote.
